Accessibility and ways to play

Last updated:

Take your time

Daily Migration advances when you choose a move.Hatchling Compass and Reef Partners are also untimed, and Predator Silhouettes starts without a timer. Daily Migration records elapsed time but has no countdown that ends your attempt. The Nest Temperature Lab, learning pages, and coloring sheets offer other ways to explore without real-time action controls.

Keyboard and pause controls

Use Tab and Shift+Tab to reach links and buttons, and Enter or Space to activate buttons. The first link skips the header. Daily Migration has labeled movement buttons; while one is focused, arrow keys or W, A, and D move one square per press. Its visible position message reports your row, column, remaining shells and encounters. The Full Journey and Coral Weave offer pause buttons and P or Escape shortcuts when the game area is focused. Coral Weave pauses when focus leaves its game area. The optional timed Silhouettes challenge pauses when you leave the question; you can switch to untimed play during an attempt.

Coral Weave also offers untimed nesting practice from its start screen. Lay up to 20 pretend eggs and finish when ready. Practice does not add eggs or change saved records or classroom scores. During a normal nesting round, you can switch to practice; that run will no longer save rewards or scores.

Read aloud

Articles and species profiles have a Read aloud button. Daily Migration can read its instructions and your current position. Pause, resume, or stop reading at any time; leaving the page stops it. Choose a reading speed before starting. This uses an English voice the browser reports as local, and does not fall back to a remote voice if none is available.

Known limitations

Voice availability and speech controls vary by browser and device. Action games still involve timing and visual movement. We have not completed a full assistive-technology audit or obtained accessibility certification. Some game boards and illustrations may need more detailed nonvisual alternatives. Printable activities and turn-based play are alternatives, not a claim that every game is equally accessible.
